Why This Project Exists

I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and like a lot of Black kids in the South, the African and African American history I was taught in school came down to a handful of small chapters — a lesson or two on Martin Luther King Jr., and a lot more time spent on slavery. That was largely it.

Even then, I knew there had to be more to the story. I know it with total certainty now. African and African American history is far richer, far older, and far more positive than what made it into my textbooks growing up. Heritage & Horizon exists to tell that fuller story — not slavery as the whole story, but one chapter within a much longer arc of kingdoms, invention, art, resistance, faith, and achievement that stretches from pre-colonial Africa all the way to today.

What You'll Find Here

This site treats pre-colonial African societies, kingdoms, art, science, and governance as a subject in their own right — not as a prelude to slavery. Across every era, the default lens is achievement: what was built, created, discovered, organized, won, or overcome. Where enslavement, Jim Crow, and other systemic obstacles are part of a person's or era's story, they're covered honestly and factually, then the page moves to what came next — resistance, rebuilding, and accomplishment. Every entry here is built from cited sources — never invented, never guessed at. See Sources & Methodology for exactly how facts, images, and narrative text are researched, sourced, and reviewed before they publish. Original portraits and illustrations on the site are created by Corey Barksdale, usually for subjects where no rights-cleared historical photograph exists — see Original Portraits & Illustrations.
